EAP Thanksgiving dinner rented out a high-society Italian restaurant. It was supposed to be a traditional holiday dinner, but it was a little off… actually a lot off. Who puts orange rinds in pumpkin pie? But it went all unnoticed because of the endless Italian wines. Not a second was lost before a waiter refilled me meager looking glass. My kind of life.

I started to fall in love with Bangkok. Originally it was just a hub; it had my home, my school. Then I would pack a weekend bag and get away. But then I fell in love. I learned to avoid the wobbly looking cement tiles on the sidewalk because they squirt you with Bangkok water like a clam— it’ll get you good. I found my favorite food vendor by my house, I still have no idea what exactly what it was. I love the hour long cab rides that only cost 3 dollars, yet it’s still something worth complaining about. I learned to love buckets, which was a true accomplishment! Buckets, they’re sand castle buckets straight out of your childhood only this time it’s got rum, coke, and red bull, plus about a dozen straws jammed in just in case. You got to be careful though, because sometimes they’ll get you good too. I learned how to order dishes that weren’t on the menu in the regular digs. I FINALLY got the old scary Thai woman at the alley restaurant to say I speak Thai well, only I didn’t remember the word for ‘well’ so that after she complimented me I responded with “I don’t understand”. She laughed and rolled her eyes. That translated perfectly. I learned that I love noodle soup with congealed blood. Yeah, you heard me right. I learned to take hour long motorcycle taxis sitting side saddle to get through traffic— I’m sorry but those are just the fastest things to get around town, and you know I’m perpetually late to everything (Pops, you can’t get mad, it’s done and over with now). I also learned about beer towers. They’re so obsolete, it’s ridiculous, but it’s exactly how it sounds— a tower of beer at your table. I learned to brave food poisoning… that was unfortunate actually.

My last jig was a short trip back to Kanchanaburi, one of the first places I went. Not much happened, yet it was one of my favorite trips. It involved rented bicycles, which led us to a monkey school where I got mauled by a monkey— I would have liked some small warning that it was going to jump at my face and stand on my head. The bicycles also brought us to the bridge over River Kwai… only we rode over it… between the train tracks… only to come to a sign on the other side that states no vehicles of any sort are permitted on the bridge and violators will be severely punished. Woops! It was worth it. We were stopped and asked to pose in pictures with all the Thai tourists. I love being the tourist attraction at a historical site. It’s a feeling I’ve become quite familiar with.

So, I came with about 12kg and I’m returning with 64kg. I’m finally earning back that day I lost in Hong Kong in June; I left Thailand at noon on the 22nd and I arrive in LAX as noon… on the 22nd. I’m fearing the jet-lag though. Maybe I should of just stayed in Bangkok.

I feel I should also explain why I don’t know how to use a fork anymore. It’s all about spoons, baby. Every dish is served with a spoon. Spoons are so much more sensible, they transport everything so much more safely— less hazardous spills. How did I once manage forks and knives? Believe me, I’ve been experimenting here because it’s not like riding a bike, and someone’s gonna lose an eye. I’m bringing the spoon back as the spotlight of the dinner table (It’s actually just for your safety).

I’ll be seeing some of you soon, some of you later. Let me know when our paths will be crossing in Santa Barbara.

much love,
Katy.

P.S. Anyone know of a place for me to live in Santa Barbara????

Bangkok

Bangkok

Let's Get Riele

I exchanged my baht for some American dollars to get intimate with Cambodia and Southern Vietnam. I didn’t have much time to admire how funny looking dollars seem to me now because I burned through that stuff like it was my job. I learned that Cambodia is festering with Toyotas and dilapitated roads ( I never knew Toyota Camries could go off-roading), krammas/scarves are hella fashionable, my math skills were refined after dealing with two currencies in one transaction (1000 Rieles equals 25 cents), the Cambodian’s idea of food is awfully mislead, Angkor beer and Anchor beer are two different brews but both quite good, and despite the poverty and recent genocide, the children still take the time to wave to you as you pass them on a tuk tuk (and sometimes flip you off… punks). The roomie and I admired the Khmer people for a bit before we took our leave to set our eyes on the Vietnamese soil. Some trio motorcycle taxi-ing through the border stations, we landed in the border town Ha Tien that apparently had only 2 English speakers— too bad we didn’t pay them more attention before we sailed our way as fast as we could to the island of Phu Quoc to bask in some clean air and sun rays. I’m glad I got to see the place before the megaresorts rise across the landscape— they’ve already started clearing the trees away. One day there was the perfect dose of a real vacation before we battled our way through the traffic of Saigon. The four crowds of friends that experienced Ho Chi Minh City seperately got a completely different impression than one another. For me, the city was free of stray dogs & beggars, swarming with motorcycles that actually followed the 2 person max law & all wore helmuts— weird I know, less cars so fresher air, and dank ass food. I visited the CuChi tunnels (tehe) where the Viet-cong staged their guirilla warfare against the “American Imperialists”. After my 10 day adventure, I now have 8 new entrance and exit stamps and 3 visas claiming stake in my passport… all from only 2 countries (well… 1 exit stamp from Thailand). I unfortuneatly get to go to the US embassy for another passport because I have no more pages left. On the plus side, maybe I won’t look like a vampire in my next passport photo. Fingers crossed.

As for school? Well we’re almost at finals, the tests aren’t actually testing knowledge, I can’t understand the professors, I still haven’t had a full conversation in Thai, and it’s about that time when all the exchange students start hating each other because the gossip travels so fast. Fun, eh? I’m counting down the days til the bff from home gets here so some sanity returns (not to call her or myself sane in any way).

I’m spent.
Katy.

in Formation

We’re name droppers. Shamelessly so. But dropping that Thammasat student ID card when we’re getting haggled is awesome. Maybe our egos don’t fit in the room after that, but the prices get halved. Don’t get me wrong, they’re by no means local Thai prices, there’s just not that bitterness of knowing you’re getting screwed to the max. A crew of us took a few days off school to travel a bit (that’s an understatement). We donned our treking gear in Chiang Mai with some hill traversing and some elephant galavanting. The trek was a trip in a half with Dr. O as our tour guide. The first day a rain cloud followed us everywhere. We dropped some baht to kick it with some chang (that means elepants, yo). I learned how to steer them— obviously I’m a pure natural. I got to bring home some priceless moments as well as a pound of mud on my sneakers.

An overnight bus back to Bangkok, I arrived in the city at 6am only to go to school to take a test at 9am, finish up with classes, run home to pack another bag and race to the airport in Bangkok traffic. 12 hours after my bus arrival, I was in departures of the BKK airport going to Phuket. Somehow I always find myself in the red light districts, which is unfortunate. Hopped and skipped my way to Koh Phi Phi to “chillax”— I hate that word, too— on one of Tailandia’s beaches while occupying my nights with some buckets of turps. The night life would kick you in the butt if you’re not wary. Don’t worry Ma, no wet t-shirt contests for me— Can’t really say the same for my friend, though on a romantic note, she took her prize money to get her boyfriend’s name tattooed on the inside of her lip. I know what you’re thinking— I wish I had a girlfriend like that!. You can always dream big. Now Ma, and you thought I was a handful?! Gu-faw.

Despite the copious amounts of Thai Red Bull (Did you hear they bottle crystal meth in those things?!) I’m exhausted. Just thought I’d send you an update so my mother would stop nagging.

By the way, did you know I’m in Bangkok?! I forget sometimes.

Also, check the photos: thisisthailandsucka.shutterfly.com
(T.I.T.S.)

Send me some one liners on what you’re up to.

PEACE.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai
